Learn the basics of thermodynamics to explore energy conservation
Increasing energy efficiency not only helps individuals and organisations lower operating costs, but it also reduces carbon emissions.
On this six-week course from Taipei Medical University, you’ll develop your knowledge of sustainable building and energy-saving technology to understand the importance of energy conservation.
You’ll explore the basic laws of thermodynamics before moving onto energy use from different perspectives. Then, you’ll be introduced to practical case studies to help you understand future trends in sustainable building and energy development.
Explore different types of energy
To help you understand the problems and opportunities arising from energy use, you’ll delve into its different types such as nuclear and renewable.
Within this, you’ll explore the relationship between energy consumption and the environment to understand how it is contributing to climate change.
Unpack energy efficient building design
You’ll explore energy efficiency from a variety of contexts such as how an air conditioning system can have an energy-saving design. You’ll also explore different energy efficient building designs such as sunshades and passive heating.
Next, you’ll discover the energy efficiency codes you may need to follow in your country.
Uncover the importance of wind energy
Finally, you’ll delve into the use of wind energy to understand why we need it, its challenges, and how to make use of wind energy in compact urban areas.
You’ll then explore the future emerging technologies in the wind power sector as well as the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy.
By the end, you’ll have the knowledge to confidently discuss sustainable building and energy efficient development.
Syllabus
Week 1
Energy and living
Types and uses of energy
In this session, we start this topic with the definition of energy, the forms of energy, how we use it in our daily life, and how it changes the environment in that we live.
Problems arising from the use of energy
In this session, we will explore the environmental impacts of energy, in particular the environmental and health threats posed by pollutants from fossil fuel combustion, including acid rain, smog, and global warming.
Week 2
Air conditioning system energy-saving design
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning system
In this session, we will present the functions and types of air conditioning systems, learn how they work and the impact of thermal comfort and air quality on people.
Operation of central air conditioning system
In this session, we will introduce various types of air conditioning equipment and their energy saving technologies from different perspectives.
Week 3
Ice storage air-conditioning system
Air conditioning system
In this session, we'll talk about air conditioning system. The main function of it is to control the flow of indoor air and regulate the air temperature so that the room can have a comfortable environment.
Ice storage system
In this session, we'll learn about the ice storage system. It uses off-shore power to store cold and release cold energy during peak hours, transferring power during peak hours and saving electricity.
Week 4
Energy efficient building design
Building Design and Systems
In this session, we will explain the relationship between building design and climate, and design for energy savings.
Energy Efficient Building
In this session, we will introduce the energy efficient building that they simply use different building methods, materials, and other resources to create a more energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly structure.
Week 5
Building ventilation
Concepts and types of ventilation
In this session, we'll introduce the concept and types of ventilation. Ventilation moves outdoor air into a building or a room, and distributes the air within the building or room.
Ventilation system design with CFD
After understanding the design of ventilation systems, let's see how to apply Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) to ventilation system design.
Week 6
Urban wind energy
Wind energy
Wind energy refers to the energy generated by the wind. The main application is wind power generation, which uses the wind to drive wind turbines.
Urban wind energy operation
Wind energy is a clean renewable energy source that is friendly to the environment. Wind power does not produce air or water pollution during its operation and can be converted into clean electricity.
