Skip to 0 minutes and 9 seconds Welcome to the fantastic journey of electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic waves are the fundamental building block of science and technology, underlying many things from wireless communications to medical imaging. In this course, we will study the principles that govern electric and magnetic fields, including their sources, their natures, as well as their consequential energies and forces. This journey is built on three core topics– electrostatics, magnetostatics, and electrodynamics. Beginning with electrostatics, we learn about electric fields and electric potential as governed by Coulomb’s law and Gauss’s law. Next, we will turn to magnetostatics, which explains how a moving charge or, similarly, electric currents can generate magnetic fields. And this is described by Ampere’s law. The last topic is electrodynamics, based on Faraday’s law.
Skip to 1 minute and 12 seconds Here, we study how a changing magnetic flux can generate a different type of electric field, which we will refer to as induced electric field. Along with these laws, we will also use various definitions and examples to help with our understanding and learning. My name is Hsiao-Chun (Amy) Lin, and I’m from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Sciences from the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. After learning these three concepts, you will then have almost all the tools needed to understand Maxwell’s equations. The last missing puzzle will be dynamic magnetism, which will enable us to derive the EM wave equations.
