Critically analyse the economic complexities relevant to health policy and management.

Through this program, you'll examine how health care systems are financed and funded. You'll explore the core theories of supply and demand in health care, including the importance of information (and information asymmetry), the critical role of insurance, hospital financing and delivery, long-term care organisation, pay-for-performance schemes, and private/public mix in finance and provision of health care.

Who will you learn with?

Dr Khurshid Alam is an Associate Professor in Health Economics at the Murdoch Business School. His key areas of research are health financing, health equity, impact evaluation and economic evaluation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the program, you should be able to:

  • Analyse the economic complexities of health and health care relevant for health policy and management;
  • Identify the key economic trade-offs implied in different healthcare allocation problems, and analyse their implications;
  • Critically examine the economic reasons behind trends in health care system development;
  • Critically discuss the way different health systems address these fundamental trade-offs;
  • Apply economic and statistical tools to concrete health economics issues that arise in the work place;
  • Critically evaluate a research design used to identify the effects of a health policy.
  • Link different policy recommendations to specific types of market failure;
  • Interpret, analyse and synthesise data from a variety of sources and communicate information effectively.
