Why study in China?
Why study in China?
In the past five years, Chinese universities have steadily improved their performance in the world university rankings, and Chinese universities have achieved remarkable results in the QS ranking and the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Subject. According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, there are 71 universities in mainland China on the list, of which five universities rank among the top 50 in the world and 33 universities rank among the top 500 in the world. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities by the Shanghai Ranking, there are 203 universities in mainland China on the list, of which 13 are ranked among the top 100 in the world.
2. Chinese universities invest huge construction funds
There are currently 3,000 universities in China, of which nearly 1,000 universities enrol international students. Among the 1,000 universities, about 300 universities offer undergraduate and master’s degrees, and 700 universities offer associate degrees.
In 2023, the Chinese government’s total investment in education was 870 billion US dollars, up 5.97% year-on-year, and has been growing for 10 consecutive years, becoming the largest expenditure in the Chinese government’s public financial budget. Among them, university funding accounts for more than 35% of the total investment in education, exceeding 300 billion US dollars. The total number of national key laboratories in China has remained at around 700, and more than 80% of China’s universities have reached world-class hardware facilities. The huge investment means that Chinese universities not only provide high-quality teaching and research, but also provide a series of hardware facilities such as first-class libraries, gymnasiums, and laboratories.
3. Studying in China brings unlimited job opportunities
With the promotion of China’s national strategies such as the Belt and Road Initiative, more and more Chinese enterprises are beginning to expand overseas markets, which has led to an increasing demand for various types of local talents among Chinese enterprises. By 2023, the total number of overseas enterprises directly invested by China will exceed 8,000, with key regions covering Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, South America, Africa, and Central and Eastern Europe.
Chinese enterprises have high requirements for talents, and the proportion of talents with bachelor’s and master’s degrees or above in recruitment exceeds 86%. Therefore, overseas students who have obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in China and can speak Chinese will become talents that local Chinese enterprises will compete for after returning home. Overseas Chinese-funded enterprises provide local talents with diversified job opportunities in various fields, including infrastructure construction, TMT, gaming, intelligent manufacturing, cross-border e-commerce, automotive, new energy, new retail and many other industries. Job recruitment includes different professional backgrounds such as sales, marketing, finance and legal affairs, human resources, product development, technical support, management and so on.
Chinese enterprises will provide particularly competitive salaries. In many countries, if job seekers can speak Chinese, their salaries will be 50% or more higher than those of similar positions in the country. If job seekers can speak Chinese and are familiar with professional technology, and are Chinese university graduates, their salaries will be 80%-100% higher than those of similar positions.
4. Studying in China is very cost-effective
Governments and universities at all levels in China have provided a wealth of scholarships, including government scholarships, provincial and municipal government scholarships, and university scholarships. Scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodation fees, and living expenses, with the proportion of funding ranging from 50% to 100%. The proportion of outstanding international students receiving scholarships exceeds 95%.
Even if you fail to get a scholarship, the tuition fee for international students studying in China is about 300 to 4,000 US dollars per year, accommodation is about 800 to 2,000 US dollars per year, and the cost of living is about 3,000 to 4,000 US dollars per year. The cost of studying abroad is less than 10,000 US dollars per year.
