Welcome to the online course Getting to Know Catalonia: An Introduction to the Catalan Language, Culture and Society.

Do you know what and where Catalonia is?

Catalonia is a country within the Spanish State, a European country located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. It has 7.5 million inhabitants.

You have almost certainly heard about Barcelona, the Catalan Pyrenees and the Costa Brava. You most likely also know about Dalí, Miró or Antoni Gaudí and the Sagrada Família.

Did you know that Pompeu Fabra – the grammarian for which our university is named – codified modern Catalan? Catalan is the language spoken in Catalonia and other communities in Spain. It is also spoken in Andorra. The total number of Catalan speakers is 12 million. Catalonia is a nation with over a thousand years of history, with centuries-old government institutions, its own symbols and a history that is sure to open your eyes. Catalonia is felt as a nation by Catalans, although it does not have its own state

  • In the first week, we will be learning about the economy, society and the welfare state.
  • In the second, we will deal with history, politics and the media.
  • And finally, in the third, we will introduce you to the Catalan language, art and culture.
