Skip to 0 minutes and 7 secondsHello and welcome to this course on modifying challenging behaviour. My name is Steven Baker and I will be the lead educator for the next few weeks. I am also currently the headteacher of two special schools for children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties and associated challenging behaviours in the northwest of England. Previously I've worked as an Ofsted inspector. I am also on the advisory board of a think-tank all Learnus. Their aim is to bridge the gap between neuroscience research and education. More recently I've been working with my team with several prisons and police forces looking at how to use non confrontational approaches to behaviour management and modification.

Skip to 0 minutes and 45 secondsThis course is incredibly important because we are seeing a rise in the prevalence of challenging behaviour both in our schools and other settings, not just in the UK but globally. Not only that, but the needs of our children and young people are becoming increasingly complex and also in the UK alone around 10% of children and young people have a diagnosable mental health disorder. Over the next five weeks we will be exploring many different elements of challenging behaviour. By the end of the five weeks you will have evaluated your current practice regarding the management and modification of behaviour. Analyse your current reality and compared it to your ideal situation.

We will begin by asking you to consider behaviour in a wider context before focussing on your own setting and practice. There are two underpinning elements of this course which will support your journey with us. The first of these are the weekly workbooks which will be a great resource of the learning you've undertaken each week.

We strongly encourage you to use the learning journal as a way of making notes of any contents on the course which is of interest or relevance to you. Simply cut and paste segments from the course into your learning journal which you can then use to make further notes or reflect upon a later date. The final underpinning element of the course and the most crucial is that discussions you will have with your fellow learners throughout the course. The discussions will provide you with the opportunity to discuss and share your ideas and experiences with your fellow learners.

Introduction

Welcome to the course

Now that you have introduced yourself to your fellow learners, take a look at this introductory video in which Steve Baker, the lead educator, will outline what we will be covering during the course as well as their experience of dealing with, and modifying, challenging behaviour in a range of contexts.

By the end of this course, we hope you will have:

  • Evaluated your current practice regarding the management and modification of behaviour.

  • Analysed your current reality and compared it to your ideal situation.

  • Understood the latest research about the neurological basis of many behavioural issues.

  • Developed a mindset that encourages positive change.

  • Built an effective toolkit to modify behaviour.

  • Adapted your planning, environment and structures to establish excellent behaviour.

  • Considered behaviour in a wider context before focusing on your own setting and practice.

Throughout the course, there will be two useful tools where you will be able to record your thoughts and items of interest.

1. Weekly workbooks Course workbook screenshot

One of the key aims of this course is to reflect upon what is happening in your current practice and build an effective toolkit to support you to adapt and refine your approach to dealing with challenging behaviour. The weekly workbooks (Week 1 is available to download below) will be a vital tool for you to use throughout the course and will contain any activities and materials from the week. Each week’s workbook will include a learning journal into which you can simply cut and paste segments that are of interest/relevance to you from the week. It will also be a place where you can keep and record key thoughts and findings. The workbook also contains a section called the toolkit where you can similarly put strategies to modify/manage behaviour that you feel will be of benefit to you.

2. Online discussion

The online discussions will allow you to share your thoughts and comments with other learners. They will also provide you with the opportunity to support and challenge other learners who are joining you on this learning journey.
