Learn the best practices for working with subject matter experts

To help extract your course information, you’ll learn tips for working with subject matter experts.

These best practices can also be applied to instructors and faculty to ensure you build strong relationships with everyone involved in the course making.

Discover vital project management strategies

You’ll delve into project management and learn the basic tools and strategies that will aid you in your course development.

  • Week 1

    Team Structure & Instructional Design Models

    • Course introduction

      In this activity, you'll be introduced to the FutureLearn platform, and the content that will be covered during this course. You will also get an overview of the topics covered during the first week of this course.

    • Team structure

      In this activity, you will identify the basic structure of higher education course development departments and explore the roles and skills required to develop engaging learning experiences.

    • Learning theories

      You will learn that there are many different approaches to learning, and how learning theories support these types of learning. This activity provides a brief introduction to different types of learning theory.

    • Instructional design models

      In this activity, you will learn to apply the foundational principles of learning theory and instructional design models to create your own pedagogical approach.

    • Week wrap up

      In this activity, you'll have the opportunity to test your knowledge of the topics covered during the week. You will also be provided with a summary of the week's learning, and some insight on what to expect in the new week.

  • Week 2

    Working with SMEs

    • Welcome to the week

      Moving into the second week of this course, this activity will give you an overview of the topics that will be covered during this week.

    • SME/Faculty: Pitfalls and solutions

      In this activity, we will examine some of the most common problems experienced when working with SMEs.

    • Paradigm shift

      In this activity, you will explore some solutions to some of the most common problems experienced when working with SMEs, to ensure you do not fall into an adversarial relationship with your SME.

    • Copyright and fair usage

      In this activity, you will have the opportunity to reflect on the importance of fair use and copyright concepts for course creation and instructional design.

    • Week wrap up

      In this activity, you'll have the opportunity to test your knowledge of the topics covered during the week. You will also be provided with a summary of the week's learning, and some insight on what to expect in the new week.

  • Week 3

    Project Management

    • Welcome to the week

      Moving into the third and final week of this course, this activity will give you an overview of the topics that will be covered during this week.

    • Course development process

      In this activity, we identify some of the milestones and tasks that need to be accomplished as part of the course development process, as well as stakeholder involvement.

    • Communication

      In this activity, we look at communication as a key element for project management success, and we explore some of the communication methods available that will ensure clarity in a project.

    • Escalation process

      In this activity, we will learn more about why escalations happen, recognize why escalation processes are needed, and look at a basic escalation process.

    • Project management tools

      In this activity, we explore some of the available project management tools and the benefits of using these tools to manage your projects

    • Course wrap up

      In this activity, you'll have the opportunity to test your knowledge of the topics covered during the week, by completing a graded test and applying what you have learned to a task.
