During the course I’ll be joined by academic colleagues and PhD researchers who will share with you just a small number of ways that engineers are Creating the Amazing. We’ll explore some of the most exciting technologies being developed today and discover how they are being used to change people’s lives. Together we’ll investigate current research and speculate about the future of engineering, and how you can be part of it. By taking this course you’ll get a sneak preview of some of the cutting-edge technologies that our researchers are currently developing here at the University of York.

Skip to 0 minutes and 49 secondsWe’d like to ask you to do your very first practical task now: Wherever you are, take a minute to look around you. How many of the things you can see have been designed and built by engineers? If you can see a road, building or bridge, for example, these have obviously been designed and built by civil engineers. But what about the device that you are watching this video on? Everything in that device, whether it’s a mobile phone or PC, has been designed and developed by different types of engineers working in different disciplines - including hundreds of hidden components, many of which are too small to be seen by the human eye.

In this course you’ll discover how engineers work, design sensors, capture signals and build systems to improve our future environment, healthcare, space exploration and entertainment.

Welcome to our course on ‘Engineering the Future - Creating the Amazing! Over the next three weeks we will be exploring the concepts of sensors, signals and systems, and in the process, encouraging you to rethink everything you thought you knew about engineering.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
Recognise the potential of modern engineering to change the world.
Summarise the underlying component skills needed for successful engineering.
Relate mathematical and scientific concepts to real-world engineering applications.
Discuss the context of modern engineering and its role in society.
Predict future developments in technology and describe their own potential role in achieving them.
Jude Brereton and Andy Hunt will be your guides through this course. As you progress through the following steps you will hear from them both, as well as a range of other contributors, as they explore the various facets of this topic based on practices and research.

How this all works
You will work independently through the course at your own pace. All of the course content is now available to you, so if you need to, you can work ahead – but as social learning is an important part of the course it would be best if we tried to work through it together! We strongly recommend that you participate in the discussions and share your learning experiences.
Each week will have a theme, and we’ll learn about it through videos, articles and discussion. There will also be other optional tasks and exercises you can try to enhance your learning. Each week builds on the last, so we strongly recommend you work through each week in order. Each week should take you 3 to 4 hours to complete, if you do all the tasks, and there is a test at the end of each week to give an indication of what you’ve learnt.
