Skip to 0 minutes and 5 seconds We live in complex times. Climate change, environmental degradation, technological revolution, global inequality and democratic predicament are just some of the challenges facing the planet today. Education has always been known to be a key liberatory and transformational force for humanity. However, most of our education systems are rooted in traditional understandings of schooling, the privileging of certain types of human, the transfer of knowledge from one human to another, and fixed conceptions of what learning actually is. On this six week course, we will explore hopeful, radical, and joyful ways to reconsider what education means and what it might be for in the 21st century and beyond.
Skip to 0 minutes and 56 seconds We’ll draw upon contemporary research into new ways of educating, consider the connections between education and activism, and explore traditional ways of knowing the world which challenge the Western educational status quo. Working with our philosophical friend Barrack Spinoza, we will look at education through a different ethical lens, one which can move us from cynicism and despair to hope and creativity. Philosophy will be practically explored and brought to life through a series of arts based collaborative activities which take an imaginative leap into new educational realities that can be realised not somewhere in the future, but in the here and now.
Skip to 1 minute and 37 seconds We will also journey alongside a series of more than human teachers, trees, plants, animals and water to develop a new perspective on learning and find out what happens when we view the world in relation. In all of this, you’ll be led by a team from the University of Stirling, alongside contributors from other organisations to reflect on and discuss the course content and consider what it might mean for you. Join us to explore teaching and learning otherwise as we collaboratively build a new vision for education in our complex and challenging times.
