Why are some organisations able to communicate more effectively than others?

The course assesses the motivations behind organisational communication. A range of communication models are evaluated in an organisational setting to deepen your understanding of how communication takes place.

We’ll also explore organisational culture, using different approaches, and look at how this creates barriers and challenges around communication, and we’ll assess a range of communication patterns to enable us to better understand their impact.

Identify the role of communication in an organisation’s processes

  • Identify different types of communication
  • Classify the components of communication
  • Understand internal communications and evaluate the role of the grapevine

Evaluate a range of communication models in an organisational setting

These include:

  • Sender-receiver model
  • Transactional model
  • Borton’s model subjectivity
  • Application and evaluation of models to further deepen understanding of organisational communications

Describe organisational culture and how this affects communication in the workplace

  • Describe cultural communications challenges
  • Assess how ethnocentrism impacts cultural communications
  • Investigate how cultural dimensions can inform communication approaches
  • Evaluate the impact of the levels of culture within an organisation
  • Identify strategies for intercultural communications

Assess different communication patterns within an organisation

  • Explain power networks on communications
  • Critique organisational communication patterns
  • Evaluate how to optimise the balance of communication between structured and unstructured.
  • Interpret and apply communication shapes within organisations
