Throughout the course, we have considered in some detail the steps that are needed to be taken to implement each of the four components of the SAFE strategy to eliminate trachoma. At a local level, the journey begins with mapping to identify the magnitude of the problem, followed by establishment of detailed trachoma action plans. Targets and time frames are set up for each district and resources provided. However, once the implementation begins, how will we know how much is being done? How will we know when to stop? Can we measure activities? And if so, what must we measure or track? When should we measure? And what does achievement look like?

Skip to 1 minute and 13 secondsThese are all important and critical elements, and we will consider each one as part of the monitoring and evaluation system for trachoma. We also have a case study from Morocco to help us understand the process of achievement of elimination. It is important that activities, collaborations, and investment towards trachoma elimination are not withdrawn prematurely. There is, therefore, a multi-stage approach to completing a dossier for elimination at the national and WHO level. A wide range of experts have been involved in this week, and we look forward to a continued engagement with you. I also take this opportunity to thank you for taking this course.

Welcome to week 5

Every public health programme is designed to “perform” and achieve a goal. In our case the goal is to eliminate trachoma.

Programme performance is not an objective reality that can be measured but it is linked with a network of inputs, activities, outputs and outcomes. These can be intended or unintended and happen in the short, intermediate and long term.

When monitoring performance it is important to:

  • Define what to measure and how often,

  • Involve the perspective of all the key stakeholders - the customers, donors , coordinators, health workers and so on

  • Assess which internal and external factors are influences on achievement

This week we look at how to measure the performance of a trachoma elimination programme.

  • What are the measures (indicators)?

  • Who collects the data and at what level - district, national or global?

  • How is the data managed and used to guide trachoma programmes.
