Welcome to Week 3
Once again let’s start the week by talking about the questions we asked you to think about at the end of last week. Watch the video again and check your answers with ours. Were you right?
- What’s Amal doing?
Amal is setting up a reading task.
- What does Amal want the learners to do?
First she asks learners to talk about what they think will be in the text. She gets their predictions, then she asks them to read the text to see if the things they suggested are in the text.
- Why does Amal ask learners to talk about the text first, rather than asking them to read it straight away?
Amal wants learners to first predict what will be in the text because this will make the text more accessible. She then uses their predictions (which she writes on the board) as a task to direct their reading. This gives them a reason to read the text.
So, what are communication skills? That’s the question we are going to answer this week. We’re going to explore what’s involved in communicating in a second language. We’re going to talk to our learners and teachers about the challenges learners face when they communicate in English and we’ll look at how teachers use different activities to help learners develop their communication skills.
As usual there will be lots of activities and we look forward to your contributions to our tasks and the comments and ideas you share with us this week.
At the end of the week there’s a short test which will help you to see how much you’ve learned from this week about communication skills, and from previous weeks about motivation and classroom management. Getting a score of 70% or above in the test is a step towards being able to buy a Certificate of Achievement for the course.
