Build interactive digital experiences with core creative technologies

In today’s digital landscape, interactive experiences, from immersive games to digital installations, shape how we learn, play, and connect.

This course gives you a solid foundation to explore that world, combining practical skills with critical thinking.

You’ll learn the frameworks and tools to understand, analyse, and start building your own interactive digital experiences, whether you’re a creator, an analyst, or simply curious about how technology is transforming everyday life.

Understand creative technologies and interactive media

You’ll start by exploring what creative technologies are and why they matter. Learn the key concepts, vocabulary, and frameworks used to analyse interactive experiences, and see how these tools bridge art and engineering.

Through examples of games, apps, and digital installations, you’ll discover how creative technologies are shaping culture and interaction in the real world. This foundation sets the stage for deeper exploration and hands-on creation.

Critically analyse and design interactive experiences

Next, you’ll dive into the mechanics of engagement. What makes an interactive experience memorable, usable, and impactful?

You’ll learn to evaluate both artistic and technical aspects of digital tools, gaining insights into how design choices influence user experience.

By working through real-world case studies, you’ll see why some interfaces succeed and others fail, and develop your own critical thinking skills to guide your design decisions.

Gain practical digital skills with creative technology tools

Finally, you’ll put theory into practice. Using tools like Twine and p5.js, you’ll prototype and refine your own interactive experiences, while learning core principles of user experience (UX) design and methods for testing usability.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

    Interactivity

    • Welcome

An introduction to the course objectives and a chance to think about how you will learn. There is also an opportunity to introduce yourself and meet fellow learners for the first time.

    • Becoming Interactive

In this activity, we'll look to define interactivity, how this happens, and what makes interactions meaningful.

    • Focus on Video Games

A quick dive into the world of video games - what makes them attractive, who engages... and how they continue to evolve.

    • Focus on Art

Moving beyond video games and into the realm of artistic expression

    • Summary and Quiz

Let's reflect on what we've learned this week

  • Week 2

    Designing Solutions and Experiences

    • An Introduction to Design

As we start a new week, let's explore what we mean by 'design' and why it matters.

    • Understanding Users and Players

Let's explore who the end-users and other stakeholders fit into the design process, and try to get a sense of how their needs can be satisfied

    • Prototyping

Time to look at prototyping, and the process of transforming abstract ideas for interactive experiences into tangible versions

    • Evaluation

Concluding the design process, we take a quick look at why we evaluate, and how this remains an ongoing process.

    • Summary and Quiz

To see how much you've learnt so far we'll end the week with a short multiple choice quiz again, and a final discussion

  • Week 3

    Creating Experiences

    • Introducing (Some) Key Creative Tools

Let's start with the basics and explore some of the tools that might prove useful

    • Using Twine To Tell A Story

Let's examine the basics of storytlling

    • From Twine to P5.js

How do we bring our stories to life in the digital arena?

    • Summary, Quiz and Test

Bringing together all our learning for this week, and rounding up the course as a whole
