You’ll look at sustainable urban mobility planning in the wider context of a city’s overall needs. In doing so, you’ll consider how a SUMPS should harmonise with future plans for the city.

Taking a holistic approach to sustainability planning, you’ll consider how SUMPS must align with a city’s competitive ambitions of being attractive for industry, investments, commerce, and tourism.

Understand the importance of all stakeholders in sustainable transport planning

You’ll learn the best practice methods and tools for working with the varying interests and logics of many different stakeholders.

Demystify the difficulties of dealing with various initiatives and trends whilst planning an urban transformation strategy.

Understand how to govern a city’s sustainable urban development

Develop your understanding of why SUMPS are important for increasing a city’s attractiveness, competitiveness and sustainability.

  • Week 1

    Introduction of basic concepts

    • What should you know about this course?

      An introduction to the course, the FutureLearn platform and your course leaders.

    • Why should cities care about sustainable urban systems?

      An ongoing urbanisation is a reality. Learn more about the challenges cities must address in order to meet daily demands and expectations from inhabitants, companies and other stakeholders.

    • Why now?

      Currently, several factors converge driving sustainable urban mobility solutions. Which are these driving factors and why are they present now? To find answers, we look deeper into the European Green Deal and the PESTEL model.

  • Week 2

    City strategies

    • Wicked problems

      A problem or a challenge that has no single solution is called a wicked problem. Wicked problems are seen as insolvable due to their complexity, which also means that they have no determinable stopping point.

    • Where do we want to go?

      A city is often an economic and commercial hub for its region relying on its supportive urban mobility systems. As such, it changes over time and its role must be constantly (re-)evaluated.

    • Strategic dilemmas

      To optimize one factor is easy. However, city development is not easy at all. It includes trade-offs between several different factors. In this activity, you will learn what the most important trade-offs are.

    • The role of technology I.

      Today’s technology has a potential whereas yesterday’s technology can be a starting point or a major problem. In this activity, you will get an overview of the various technologies that may affect the future of urban mobility.

    • Understanding the legacy of the city

      All cities have different legacies, existing mobility system structures and contexts. It is crucial for us to understand how this legacy affects the implementation of the sustainable urban solutions we want to use.

  • Week 3

    How can you build on competitive sustainable advantages?

    • Sustainable urban mobility is not a separate issue

      Sustainable Urban Mobility planning and strategy is an integrated strategic approach to city development. As it´s not isolated from other strategies, it´s also very much dependent on co-operation with companies and stakeholders.

    • A city as an ecosystem

      A city is an ecosystem consisting of various interests and stakeholders. As the interests are many and the stakeholders´ means and intentions are diverse, we must explore several dimensions to enable change.

    • Ledger for change

      There are certain obstacles for change that fundamentally hinder transformation. Therefore, transition management must understand the complexity of challenges and the interconnectedness of the various actors involved.

    • Financial solutions

      Change and transformation is about priorities and therefore, finance is of great importance as we address urban mobility system transformation.

  • Week 4

    How can you manage transformation?

    • The role of digitalization

      Digitalization has changed how we work, live, play and communicate. It is also a major driving force for urban mobility solutions. In this activity, you will learn how digital technologies enable transformation.

    • The role of test beds

      To drive technological development – in the way users want it - test beds are good tools. In this activity, you will learn the importance of using test beds for urban mobility solutions.

    • The role of partners

      As urban mobility solutions are complex, we need to involve all stakeholders, service providers and users in our change process. In this activity, you will learn how to identify and engage various stakeholder groups.

    • The role of technology II.

      Find out more about the emerging technologies we discussed previously.

  • Week 5

    How can you maintain continuous development?

    • Citizen engagement

      One important stakeholder we have not address much so far are the citizens. If you understand how to create commitment for change among citizens and stakeholders, then you can align public opinion with change efforts.

    • Data-driven city development

      Data is central in order to improve urban mobility structures and cities. We can use data in several ways. A data management strategy in beneficiary to understand how data can be a source for continuous development.

    • Urban mobility investments

      Understanding the differences in governance methods for different purposes and time horizons.

    • Summary and final remarks

      Let´s revise what we have learnt in the course.
