This week in week one, we're going to introduce the whole topic of health care improvement and innovation, and we're going to look at why in recent years it's become more important and more pressing than ever for organisations to engage with these ideas. In this week, we're going to try and look at this over three themes. So first of all, we're going to just introduce the topic of health care improvement, explain what it means, and we're going to talk about how health care improvement evolved from a concern about unwarranted variations in the quality and the cost of our health services.

Skip to 0 minutes and 45 secondsIn the second section, we're then going to just look briefly at some of the tools and techniques associated with health care improvement and innovation, many of which have been imported from the commercial sector under the label quality management. So we're going to try and explore those tools and techniques, explain what they are. Lastly, we're going to focus on some of the complexities of change in healthcare systems. So for example, we look at knowledge and why knowledge is difficult to translate from one context to another. We look at the issue of wicked problems and the limits of radical or planned change. This will bring about an understanding of the human dimension, the organisational context of health improvement.

Skip to 1 minute and 27 secondsTo understand this issue, we'll be hearing from a number of contributions, both practitioners and academics. On the practitioners side, we'll hear from John Øvretveit from the Karolinska Institutet in Scandinavia. From academics, we'll hear from Bernard Krump, Jacky Swan, and Eivor Oborn from the Warwick Business School, and from Ian McLaughlin and Rick Iedema from Monash University.

Introduction to the challenge of healthcare improvement

In this first week of the course you will be introduced to the topic of healthcare improvement and the broader question of why change may be necessary in contemporary health systems.

This week contains three main areas:

  • The need for healthcare improvement;
  • Introducing key tools and techniques for healthcare improvement; and
  • Understanding the complexity of change.

In the first block we will define healthcare improvement as a growing field in the context of this course and look at how it emerged from a growing understanding of variations in the quality and performance of clinical services. We then turn to some of the quality improvement ideas and practices that have been used to address these concerns, showing how these have been applied in the UK National Health Service. In the final block we reflect on the challenges of change more generally and introduce the notion of ‘wicked problems’ to highlight the growing complexity of health systems and possible limitations of standard tools and techniques of healthcare improvement.

In this first week you will hear from a number of practitioners and academics, including Professor John Øvretveit, from the Karolinska Institutet and Professors Bernard Crump, Eivor Oborn and Rick Iedema from the Universities of Warwick and Monash.
