Develop an understanding of performance management concepts and issues.

This course tackles a fundamental issue in the management of human resources - how to ensure high levels of employee performance in the workplace. You’ll examine in detail the different types of techniques for managing performance. In particular, you’ll explore motivation and commitment as two critical psychological factors associated with performance. You’ll also look at the concept of employee engagement and the mechanics of performance management in the workplace.

What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you‘ll be able to...

  • Assess the importance of the concepts of commitment and motivation in the workplace, and the associated concept of the ‘psychological contract’
  • Explain and evaluate the meaning of employee engagement and its different components
  • Evaluate the methods and practices that aim to improve performance in the workplace through securing employee engagement
  • Assess how organisational change and flexibility in the workplace may impact on performance in the workplace
  • Evaluate the key ideas behind the notion of a performance management system (PMS) and examine performance management approaches more generally
  • Discuss the possibilities and limitations of PMS and the strengths and weaknesses of your own organisation’s systems using your own investigations
  • Investigate how performance management in general is practised and be able to diagnose and recommend change using your own investigations and those of your tutor group
  • Assess the problems surrounding the construction of different elements of PMS after reflecting on your own organisation’s PMS and your experience of it

Who is the course for?

This course is for students enrolled in the Postgraduate Certificate in Human Resources Management.

What software or tools do you need?

A computing device with a browser and broadband internet access is required for this module. Any modern browser will be suitable for most computer activities. Functionality may be limited on mobile devices.

Any additional software will be provided, or is generally freely available. However, some activities may have more specific requirements. For this reason, you will need to be able to install and run additional software on a device that meets the requirements below.

A desktop or laptop computer with either:

  • Windows 7 or higher
  • Mac OS X 10.7 or higher

The screen of the device must have a resolution of at least 1024 pixels horizontally and 768 pixels vertically.

Charles is a Lecturer in Management (Open University). He has extensive experience in teaching on topics related to Organisation Studies. He completed his PHD at the University of Leicester.
