On this two-week course, you’ll build knowledge and understanding of self-efficacy, patient expectations, and how to incorporate these concepts into your patent management .
You’ll learn how to assess, measure, and provide strategies to manage and build self-efficacy and positive expectations of recovery in your clinical environment. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll have the tools to improve patient care.

Through this exploration, you’ll discover how patient expectation and self-efficacy can be measured and linked with clinical outcomes.

Next, you’ll delve into the biological, psychological, and sociological effects of self-efficacy and patient expectations on patient outcome. You’ll then explore strategies for managing expectation and improving self-efficacy.

Week 1
Introducing self-efficacy
Welcome to the course
A welcome from the course team and an introduction to the topics we'll cover in this course.
Defining self-efficacy and expectation
In this activity we define self-efficacy and patient expectation and provide the theoretical underpinning for their importance. We then provide evidence for the importance of these two factors as predictors of outcome.
Exploring the evidence
We look at the research behind the course.
Assessment
In this activity we watch some videos of colleagues using conversational techniques in the clinic, followed by commentaries of the clinical consultation.
Mechanisms
In this activity we look at mechanisms of action.
Week 2
Managing self-efficacy
Managing self-efficacy and expectation
In this activity we look at strategies to manage patient expectation and self-efficacy.
The TGROW model
In this activity we introduce the TGROW model, a conversational framework, often used in health coaching, and look at examples of it action.
Reflection and summary
In this final activity we reflect on the key point of the course and invite you to participate in our research.

Who is the course for?
This course is suitable for all health care professions, pre and post-registration. It is designed for physiotherapists working with people who have musculoskeletal problems. There is no requirement for prior knowledge of psychological theories or health coaching.
