Good maternal health is a human right, as well as a pre-condition and a determinant of newborn, child, and adolescent health, and of sustainable development more generally. The persisting and widening inequalities in maternal health care make maternal survival an issue which needs to be put at the top of the public health agenda.
As we have seen in the course, the shifting burden of maternal health, health care which is characterised by being “too little, too late” or “too much, too soon”, and external shocks, all impact heavily on maternal health. It is with this in mind, that The Lancet Maternal Health Series’ key action points need to be addressed by national and local governments and global partners in working together to focus on what is needed to reach the Sustainable Development Goal target for a maternal mortality ratio of less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. Many staff and students at the school are actively engaged in maternal health research to contribute to achieving this goal.
