Learn how medical robots in healthcare are designed, regulated and used

On this course, you will learn what robots are and explore human robot interaction (HRI) in healthcare. You will identify the challenges of designing robots for healthcare and look at what MedTech scientists are doing to solve them.

Using case studies, you will learn why regulations are essential for the safe use of robots and AI in healthcare, and understand the process of bringing a successful product to market.

You will also explore how artificial intelligence is used in surgical procedures, to improve precision diagnostics, in exoskeleton technology, and even for patient care.

    Designing robots for better human interaction

    • Welcome

      In the first week of this course, you will be introduced to robots and AI and how they are used in a healthcare context.

    • What is a robot?

      In this activity, you are introduced to robots and AI and why they are needed and used in healthcare settings. You go on to examine the history of robots in healthcare, seeing how they have developed over time.

    • Human-robot interactions

      In this activity, you will examine the features of human-robot interaction. Looking at how patients interact with robots and developments in robots designed to assist patients in their rehabilitation and everyday lives.

    • Regulations and commercialisation

      This activity focuses on the regulations which you must follow when creating robots and the process of bringing a robot to market.

    • Revision

      This revision activity provides further opportunity to explore the topics covered this week.

    • Summary

      To close this week of the course, you have the opportunity to reflect on the week and explore the Glossary

    AI and Robotics in healthcare

    • About Week 2

      This week, you focus on the ways robots and AI can be used to assist both patients and clinicians

    • How robots can assist patients

      In this activity, you consider the needs of the patient who will interact with a robot and think about what implications this has for the design of robots.

    • Assisting clinicians

      In this activity, you focus on the ways that robotics and AI can be used to support the work of clinicians in healthcare settings as well as considering the implications this may have on the design of robots.

    • Towards post-human care?

      In this activity, you explore how AI and Robotics might impact the future of healthcare. You will research whether the growing use of new technologies means a reduction in the amount of human care in the healthcare system.

    • Revision

      This revision activity provides you with further opportunity to explore the topics covered this week.

    • Summary
