Learn how genomics is changing the future of healthcare

Advances in genomics have opened up exciting new possibilities for healthcare. On this course, you’ll learn what genomics is, and how it can revolutionise patient care. You’ll learn how genomic testing works, and consider the regulatory and ethical issues that surround it.

You’ll explore how genomics can improve patient care by understanding how genomic data helps clinicians to identify illness risk more accurately, using the specific examples of cancer and epidemics such as Zika virus disease. You will also look at the future of genomics, and how it might impact healthcare roles.

Skip to 0 minutes and 9 seconds Over the past 20 years, advances in the field of genomics have led to a range of new products and possibilities for healthcare. So, what is genomics? Genomics is the study of genomes. A genome is the complete map of an organism’s DNA, including all of its genes, like a blueprint for our bodies containing all our genetic instructions. In this course, you will explore some of the latest developments in genomics. You will learn how DNA sequencing is being used to identify an individual’s risk of developing diseases. You will consider the implications of genomics for personalised medical care for genetic diseases, such as cancer, and meet some of the product developers who have revolutionised this field.

Skip to 0 minutes and 54 seconds You will also reflect on the ways in which clinical roles are adapting and evolving as a result of technological developments, debate how these exciting innovations and opportunities have raised a range of ethical and regulatory questions that industry experts are currently grappling with. Discover the expertise and work taking place at the University of Leeds in the field of medtech.

  • Week 1

    An introduction to genomics

    • Welcome

Before you get started, take some time to meet the educators who will support you throughout the course. You'll have the opportunity to meet your fellow learners and plan your learning journey.

    • What is genomics?

In this activity, you’ll consider your current knowledge of genomics, with an initial reflection on media and scientific presentations. You’ll then consider the role of DNA and explore key achievements of the Human Genome Project.

    • Who are the stakeholders?

In this activity, you have the opportunity to explore how technological developments in genomics and methods of sequencing affect different stakeholders. You’ll also consider the impacts on screening, diagnosis and treatment.

    • The challenges of genomic testing

In this activity, you explore how genomic testing works and the ways in which genomic risk is perceived by different stakeholders. You will also consider related regulatory and ethical issues.

    • Revision

This revision activity is optional and is designed for those signed up for the MedTech Futures program.

    • Summary

To close this week of the course, you have the opportunity to check your understanding, reflect on the week and explore the Glossary

  • Week 2

    Genomics technology and healthcare

    • About Week 2

This week, you will explore how genomics programmes are improving healthcare, and consider the importance of user involvement, data and accuracy in identifying the risk of disease and enhancing treatment.

    • Addressing patient needs

In this activity, you look at how genomics is impacting patient care. You’ll explore the My Cancer, My DNA project and find out how cancer patients can contribute to and benefit from developments in genomics.

    • How are healthcare roles evolving?

In this activity, you revisit how technological developments are impacting on clinical roles. You’ll explore how existing healthcare roles are adapting, and how new roles are being created and others are being phased out.

    • MedTech innovations

In this activity, you explore how MedTech innovators and entrepreneurs develop new genomic technologies and techniques. You’ll also explore a case study illustrating the international impact of these developments.

    • Revision

This revision activity provides further opportunity to explore the topics covered this Week. It is recommended that learners join this activity if they have signed up for the program and are working towards academic credit.

    • Summary

This activity reflects on the two weeks of the course. There is also an opportunity for you to find out more about the range of courses available within the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds.
