Meet the mentors

The course features mentoring by Sherelle Connaughton and Olivia Downing. They’ll support you as you make your way through the course, directing discussions and providing additional information to help make your learning experience the best it can be.

We strongly recommend following Sherelle and Olivia to make sure you’re aware of the comments they make throughout the course. You can follow them by selecting the links to their FutureLearn profile pages and then selecting follow. That way, you’ll easily be able to notice the comments they make.

It’s worth noting that Sherelle and Olivia will focus their mentoring efforts in the current week of the course and not previous weeks.

Sherelle Connaughton

Sherelle has worked in varied health and education settings for over 25 years, having trained in the fields of psychology, research and music therapy. Since completing her Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2007, her focus has been on health enhancement, particularly mindfulness and stress management, for students and staff from numerous departments at Monash University. She also consults for corporate clients and people with chronic health concerns and has mentored every run of both the Mindfulness for Wellbeing and Peak Performance course and Maintaining a Mindful Life since the initial course was first offered on the FutureLearn platform in 2015.

More recently, Sherelle has expanded her research work at Monash University and is currently supervising four individual psychology projects that explore motivation to study mindfulness online, what helps and hinders practice efforts, and the effect of mindfulness practice on stress, wellbeing, awareness and engagement. The research team are also considering if age, gender and/or previous meditation experience might influence practice outcomes.

Olivia Downing

Liv Downing is a Registered Psychologist, Coach and Meditation Teacher. She began her career working with children with autism and then moved into working with young adults within a psychosocial rehabilitation setting. After completing her post-graduate studies, she worked in organisational psychology for 10 wonderful years and then moved back into the clinical space.

While working as a counsellor, she was trained in Mindfulness-Based Therapy and she immediately fell in love with this technique. After seeing the benefits of including mindfulness into both her professional and personal tool kit she set up Liv Mindfully. She partnered with Smiling Mind to design and deliver their first corporate program in 2013 and wrote the content for Beyond Blue’s parenting app - Mind the Bump.

She co-founded Happy Melon in 2014 and now, through her own business, she partners with organisations to deliver mindfulness-based solutions. She has the great honour of working with Monash University to deliver programs within the Medical and Education Faculties as well as assisting with the delivery of Monash’s online mindfulness courses.
