Understand the epidemiology of monkeypox

Monkeypox (mpox) is a rare infectious disease that can be passed from person to person.

On this two-week course, you’ll learn how to protect yourself and others as you explore the epidemiology, clinical symptoms, signs, and prevention of monkeypox.

You’ll gain an understanding of the emergence of mpox before exploring the potential of this disease becoming a pandemic.

Learn to identify monkeypox symptoms

As you learn more about the mpox virus, you’ll explore the signs and symptoms of the disease and how it differs from chickenpox, smallpox, and measles.

You’ll understand the routes of transmission and the incubation and infectious period before identifying high-risk groups.

Explore monkeypox prevention and control strategies

To help protect yourself and others, you’ll learn key prevention and control strategies. This includes workplace procedures and travel advice.

Finally, you’ll learn to address the stigma surrounding the virus to ensure mpox messaging is clear but non-judgemental.

Skip to 0 minutes and 11 seconds Mpox virus virus is an orthopoxvirus that causes human Mpox. It is a viral disease with symptoms similar to smallpox, including fever and rash. Mpox is a viral zoonosis which is a virus transmitted to human from animals. The Mpox virus usually affects rope squirrels, trees squirrel, Gambian pouched rats, and nonhuman primates,such as monkeys. The Mpox virus is normally endemic to Africa but has recently been found on other continents. Anyone can become infected through direct contact with respiratory droplets of another person who has Mpox in the home or in health facility, or with contaminated materials such as bedding, clothing and any touching surfaces.

Mpox outbreaks tend to occur in small cluster of a few cases without leading to widespread community transmission. Therefore, the outbreak can be easily controlled if we responded to them fast and effectively. I am an Associate Professor in Epidemiology in the Department of Social & Preventive Medicine, Universiti Malaya. My expertise is in infectious diseases, research methodology, and biostatistics.

Dr Lim is employed as a medical lecturer and occupational health physician at the University of Malaya (UM).

I'm an Occupational Health Physician at University Malaya and University Malaya Medical Centre. My area of interest includes noise-induced hearing loss & hearing conservation.

Dr. Howie Lim is a senior lecturer at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. His research focuses on HIV prevention and treatment among MSM.
