Throughout the week we will think about the biology, behavior, and distribution of this type of mosquito, which is also responsible for the transmission of diseases such as chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever and West Nile virus. Our first activity will look at the characteristics of Aedes, considering its life cycle and behaviors at each stage of life to help us understand where different control interventions can be targeted. We will also look at why, where, and when the adult mosquitoes are likely to bite us.

Finally we'll investigate mosquito surveillance methods, highlighting why we need to do this and demonstrating some practical methods for trapping and monitoring both adult and immature mosquitoes. Welcome to Week 2

Welcome to Week 2. We now have some understanding of what the Zika virus is and the uncertain future of this outbreak, but in the absence of a vaccine what can we do to control the spread of the disease?

This week we will move on and look at the vector of the Zika virus: the Aedes mosquito. We will think about the biology, behaviour, and distribution of this type of mosquito, which is also responsible for the transmission of diseases such as chikungunya and dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile virus. If we know more about Aedes we should have a better chance of being able to control it.

What will we learn?

During this week we will:

  • Examine the characteristics of Aedes, including its lifecycle, behaviours, and how an understanding of these can enable us to target control interventions
  • Hear about the distribution of Aedes, including where they live in the world and where they might be found in a domestic setting, and
  • Observe mosquito surveillance methods and some practical methods of trapping and monitoring adult and immature mosquitoes.
