Skip to 0 minutes and 12 secondsWelcome to this Lancaster University course, Soils-- Introducing the World Beneath Our Feet. I'm Dr. Carly Stevens, the lead educator on this course. You'll see me each week, as I introduced you to the week's activities and talk to people with a range of expertise in soil. Here, at Lancaster Environment Centre, we're really keen on soils. And there are good reasons for this, as soils are incredibly important in a variety of ways. They're integral to our daily lives. Not only are they a vital part of the natural environment, influencing the plants that grow and providing habitat for a wide range of organisms. But they're also key to managing our water supply, producing our food, and supporting infrastructure.

Skip to 1 minute and 2 secondsOver the next four weeks, we'll learn about soils. We'll start by exploring what the soils are. Then we will look at the variety of life that can be found in soils. Next, we'll move on to looking at why we aren't the only ones who think that soils are important, as we start to consider some of the threats to our soils. By the end of this course, we hope that you will have a good understanding of the natural world beneath our feet, and why we need to conserve this, as well as more charismatic plants and animals. We'll be using a variety of methods to learn together about soils.

Skip to 1 minute and 41 secondsYou'll find articles to read, videos to watch, and activities to participate in, some of which will literally involve getting your hands dirty. We really hope that you will be able to participate and join us in our discussions. We're confident that during this course, we will convey our enthusiams for this subject to you and show you why we should be thinking more about soil.
