There are many ways to get your business up and running, from the informal such as personal savings and borrowing, borrowing from friends and family, to the more formal avenues like bank loans, raising equity to crowd-funding. This course will help you consider the finance options available for businesses, and how to fund the expansion of a business.

There are many ways to get your business up and running, from the informal– such as personal savings and borrowing– to the more formal avenues– like bank loans, raising equity, and crowd funding. This course will provide you with the opportunity to consider what kinds of funds might help you with your new venture. Through videos, activities, and quizzes, this series of business courses introduce case studies of young entrepreneurs who are already on the journey. They share their business challenges with you and a panel of business advisers.

    Funding your business

    • Welcome

      This week, you will explore the importance of funding opportunities when starting a business. Before you get started, take the time to meet your fellow learners and share your reasons for joining this course.

    • Funding your business

      This course considers the different options which may be available to you to help fund your business idea. You will be introduced to the different types of funds that can be raised to help start your business.

    • The team's business challenge

      In this activity, Barney, Sam and James share their business challenge. This involves deciding which direction their business should take. You have the opportunity to join some expert advisers in helping the team move forward.

    • Summary

      To close this week, we would like to introduce you to some of the options for studying at the University of Leeds and look forward to next week.

    • About week 2

      This week, you have the opportunity to define your business vision, communicate and collaborate with other learners from around the world, and share and discuss your ideas.

    • Your turn

      In this activity, you will research new organisations in your local area which have used crowdfunding to launch its business. You will also have go at writing a sales pitch for your business idea.

    • Your business plan

      Throughout this series of courses, you are encouraged to document your ideas and thoughts in order to produce a coherent business plan.
