This course aims to develop your understanding of the teaching sector and identify and improve upon the skills you need to become a great teacher.

Demystify the teacher training process

The number of routes into teaching and the variety of choice can sometimes seem bewildering.

Whether you’re interested in primary, secondary, or specialist teaching, this course aims to help you familiarise yourself with how the teacher training process works so that you should feel confident in choosing the right path for you.

You’ll explore the practical considerations of becoming a teacher, and consider how to make personal choices about your teaching future – from deciding which age group to teach to discovering what teacher training funding is available.

Learn how to choose a PGCE course that works for you

As well as receiving tips and advice from teaching professionals about how to get into teaching, you’ll have the opportunity to learn what to look out for when choosing a PGCE.

With guidance from teacher training experts at Coventry University, you’ll have the chance to compare different PGCE study route options and identify the PGCE route which aligns best with your teaching career aspirations.

    What does it take to be a great teacher?

    • Welcome to the course

      Welcome to Coventry University’s National Institute of Teaching and Education. To get us started on this course, we want to find out - what do you think makes a great teacher?

    • Why become a teacher?

      Teaching can be a challenging profession, but there are also many benefits to this career. In this activity, we will look at some of the rewards and challenges of being a teacher.

    • Primary or secondary?

      Different school phases offer different teaching experiences. Have you decided which phase you will teach?

    • PGCE/iPGCE study and support for trainees

      In this activity, we provide a snapshot of PGCE and iPGCE study and look at the range of support available on a PGCE/iPGCE course.

    • Review of the week

      In this week's final activity, you'll have an opportunity to have your teaching questions answered.

    Becoming a teacher - teacher training explained

    • Routes into teaching

      There are several routes into teaching. In this activity, we'll explain your options.

    • Choosing the right PGCE/iPGCE for you

      In this section, we provide an overview of funding options, explore key questions to consider when selecting a provider and explore what makes studying with National Institute of Education and Teaching such a unique experience.

    • Professional development

      Your aspiration won’t end when you step into the classroom. In this activity, we’ll look at continuing professional development and how, as a new teacher, training is a lifelong commitment.

    • Summary and next steps

      As we near the end of the course, you'll have an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about teacher training and we look at where you can go next.
