Approaches to linking

So far this week we have looked at how we can link practical work within a specific topic, using waves as our example. As mentioned in the previous step there are a variety of ways you could do this and you have shared your thoughts on this.

One of the big outcomes we want from this is an improvement on the impact of the students learning. There is now a bigger push for students to understand the bigger picture of science and making links across topics, and even between subjects like science and maths…but that’s a another course!

One way of linking within your subject, which we have covered this week is the water tray practical. This is a simple and effective practical which builds scientific investigative skills, and could easily be linked across topics. Do your students realise they are using the speed = distance / time equation which occurs when we are teaching forces and motion? Do we as teachers make this explicit so students can see the relevance of what they are learning when it comes to the bigger picture?
