Children's Literature

This program, ENGL2011, provides a representative survey of children's literature.

This program is part of the Bachelor of Arts degree offered by The University of Newcastle Australia

Take a deeper look at the stories we tell our children and the ways of thinking that are transmitted with them.

Topics investigated will include the nature and social context of children's literature, the relationship between text and illustration, the presentation of social issues in writing for children, the role of imagination and fantasy, and the representation of Australian childhood.

Who will you learn with?

I am a senior lecturer in Screens, Languages, English and Writing at the University of Newcastle. I have Murri heritage and teach and research in the areas of Australian and Aboriginal literature.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify different genres of children's literature.

  2. Discuss linguistic and literary properties common in literature written for children.

  3. Evaluate the inter-relationship of text and illustrations.

  4. Interpret the presentation of cultural variation, human relationships and social tensions in children's literature.

  5. Apply reading and critical analysis skills at an intermediate level.
