An overview of the key approaches to designing practice-based healthcare research

This program provides an overview of the key approaches to designing practice-based healthcare research. Considering the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of research, it critically appraises different design and methodological approaches utilised in health, social sciences and related fields of practice.

The program will develop your ability to prepare a detailed research proposal relevant to your field of academic study, professional practice or service improvement area. The importance of ethical, social, legal, political and economic aspects of research studies will also be examined.

Upon successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Critically review a clinical guideline for a specific presentation, examining the application of evidence-based practice and research principles to healthcare practice.
  • Critically appraise the philosophical underpinnings of research and their application to developing appropriate methodologies for research studies and apply these principles to a specific research question.
  • Design a short research proposal, utilising an appropriate research methodology, to investigate an area of relevant health care practice, demonstrating how this would meet ethical approval standards.
  • Critically apply healthcare research principles to the rational for a research project or business proposal.
