Explore the creation and transformation of school culture

This program aims to develop and enhance your knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles that underpin the effective leadership of culture and cultural change in an educational setting.

You will be introduced to the importance of institutional culture and the analytical models which provide a research base for understanding how cultures operate in an educational context.

You will also have the chance to investigate the features of leadership behaviour that determine a school’s culture, as well as the effectors and inhibitors of cultural change.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the central purpose of leadership, to establish an institution’s culture that provides a basis or opportunity for developing your personal commitment to a cultural typology and to apply ideas in a range of settings evidenced through case-study exercise
  • Knowledge and understanding of the key principles which influence the leadership of institutional change and the effectors and inhibitors of that change
  • Application of knowledge through case-study activities in new or unfamiliar situations
  • Integration of knowledge and the ability to handle complexity, and formulate judgements in response to the online materials and in the two assessed pieces
  • Commitment to a problem-solving approach for formulating judgements
  • Originality of thought and the academic skills of synthesis and analysis
  • Ability to communicate your conclusions and the reasons for them to specialist and non-specialist audiences through online collaborative learning sets
