Develop your leadership skills by exploring research-based evidence on effective leaders.

This program is part of the MA Educational Leadership and MA Educational Leadership - Apprenticeship degrees offered by Coventry University

Refine your leadership style through analysis of leadership theory and practice

This program aims to develop your knowledge of the fundamental theories and principles which underlay effective leadership in an educational setting.

You will be encouraged to explore the meaning of leadership and why it matters. As well as investigating key characteristics of effective leaders, you will be asked to reflect on a range of leadership theories based on academic research.

Through this you will have the opportunity to apply the theories to guide strategic planning and identify practical day-to-day implications for headship.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to demonstrate:

  • That they have acquired knowledge and understanding of the research evidence of effective leadership, that provides a basis or opportunity for developing their own personal leadership style, and to apply ideas in a range of settings evidenced through case-study exercises and the essay on ‘The Nature of Leadership’.
  • They can apply that knowledge through case-study activities in new or unfamiliar situations.
  • They are able to integrate knowledge and handle complexity, and formulate judgements in their response to the online materials and in the two assessed pieces.
  • Through the case studies and discussions, that they can problem-solve, formulate judgements, communicate and justify them. With the essay providing further opportunities for this and for the demonstration of originality of thought, and the academic skills of synthesis and analysis.
  • They can communicate their conclusions and the reasons for them to specialist and non-specialist audiences, through online collaborative learning sets.
