As robots gain more and more capabilities, they will play an increasingly prominent part in our everyday lives. Robotics is an area of technology seeing unprecedented growth.

The Introducing Robotics program from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is made up of three online courses that build from theory to practice.

You’ll begin by exploring how we’re using robots to help solve big challenges in our society today, before considering what the future might hold for humans and robots alike.

You’ll become familiar with the mathematical knowledge and programming skills required to make robots move, and you’ll try out your skills in practical exercises.

Finally - you’ll put your skills into practice by building your own robot. You’ll design, build and program a simple robot arm, and you’ll be invited to share a video of your robot with learners around the world.

Accessible for free on desktop, tablet or mobile and delivered in bite-sized chunks, the courses provide a flexible way to develop your understanding of robotics.

When you complete all three courses and earn a Certificate of Achievement for each, you will receive a FutureLearn Award as proof of completing the program of study.

What skills will I learn?

The Introducing Robotics program is open to anyone with an interest in robotics and a desire to understand how to program robots to make them do useful tasks.

By the end of the program, you will be able to:

  • explain what robots are and what they can do;
  • knowledgeably discuss the ethical considerations of using robots to help solve societal challenges;
  • reflect on the future role and development of robotics in human society;
  • describe mathematically the position and orientation of objects and how they move;
  • describe mathematically the relationship between robot joint coordinates and robot tool pose;
  • apply the mathematical, algorithmic and control principles of robot arm manipulators to implement a working robot through physical construction and software development.

Can I learn for free?

Programs are made up of short courses, most of which you can join for free.

However, if you want to take the final assessment and unlock the award or accreditation for the program, you must upgrade each individual course or buy Unlimited to gain a Certificate of Achievement for all the courses in the program.

How do course upgrades work?

If you want to spend more time on course material and better demonstrate what you've learned, you may choose to upgrade each course. You can upgrade your courses at any point after you enrol.

When you upgrade a course, you get ongoing access to the course material for as long as the course exists on FutureLearn. This means you can return to the subject whenever you like.

You will also be given access to any course tests, and the ability to qualify for a downloadable and printed Certificate of Achievement to show what you’ve achieved.

How does Unlimited work?

If you have Unlimited, you will get access to all of the short courses in this program, plus hundreds of other short courses and tests for a year.

You have the ability to learn at your own pace throughout the year and gain digital Certificates of Achievement on all your courses.

If you gain a certificate on a course, you will keep access to the course’s content beyond your Unlimited year so you can revise the content whenever you need.
