There are many fantastic courses available for those interested in paediatric care. While specialist training for doctors and nurses will often take place in hospitals, many paediatricians continue to study online and in person throughout their careers. If you want to develop skills in a new area of paediatric care, our online courses are an accessible and affordable way to continue your professional development.

Depending on the field you want to work in, paediatrics training will vary in length. Becoming a fully qualified Consultant Paediatrician takes at least 10 years following your initial medical training. After medical school, you must undertake a 2-year foundation programme, including some experience in paediatric care. You must then apply for specialist paediatric training, which takes at least 8 years.

To become a paediatric nurse in the UK, you must complete a 3-year degree in Children’s Nursing from an organisation approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Or, if you already have a relevant degree, you may be eligible for shorter postgraduate courses.

There are many steps towards becoming a paediatrician, including the necessary qualifications. Firstly, to get into medical school, you’ll need:

  • 5 GCSEs B and above (including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Double Science
  • 3 A or A* passes at A level (including Chemistry but may also require Biology, Maths or Physics)

To become a fully trained Consultant Paediatrician, you must have:

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS, MBChB, or BMBS) from a recognised medical school
  • Evidence of the completion of your foundation programme
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Specialist Paediatric Care
