As many of us probably know over the last two decades large international comparative studies in mathematics such as TIMSS and PISA have consistently revealed that Asian students, particularly those from Singapore and China, but also from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and other places are among the top performers. This phenomenon has attracted many mathematics educators teachers, parents, as well as policymakers interest in Asian mathematics education and they hope to know more about how mathematics is taught in Asian mathematics classrooms.

This course is designed for teachers, parents and educators who are interested to learn more about how maths is taught in the highest-performing education systems in Asia, with a focus on Singapore and Shanghai. We hope this course will help you implement these approaches in your school, or simply understand how your child is being taught using Asian maths pedagogies. We will explore the reasons behind the success of these education systems, and you will gain insight into the best-known Asian maths teaching approaches with primary school-aged children.
This course is the first of two we have developed for you. For ease, we sometimes refer to this course as Course A. It will provide you with an overview of Asian Maths Pedagogy and focus more on theoretical foundations behind the Asian maths teaching methods. World Class Maths: Asian teaching practice will be our second course, sometimes referred to as Course B. It will focus more on practical skills and techniques with more classroom-based examples used in Asian maths teaching.
We encourage you to take both courses, but we have designed them in a way that even if you just take one of them, it will be helpful. We suggest you take Course A first and then Course B, but it won’t be a problem if you take Course B first and then Course A.
About Futurelearn courses
This may be the first course that you have undertaken on FutureLearn, or perhaps it is the first course you have taken online. Don’t worry: the platform is designed to be easy to navigate. You can learn whenever and wherever you like, on any desktop, mobile or tablet device. You will be learning by watching videos with leading academics, as well as reading teaching material, attempting quizzes or tests, and taking part in discussions. Comments and discussions
Learning from conversations is an important part of the FutureLearn approach. You will learn from discussions with other people taking part in the course. You can read their comments and respond with your own thoughts, on nearly all steps. On some steps there will be a more structured discussion. Sometimes you will be taken outside the platform. For example, as part of a discussion where you can add items to a discussion ‘collage’, you will be directed to a ‘padlet’. It can be useful to open these links in a new window by right-clicking on the link and choosing ‘open in a new window’.
Mark as complete
When you reach the end of a step and have understood everything, click the pink ‘Mark as complete’ button at the bottom. This will update your progress page, and will help you to keep track of which steps you have done.
Be an active participant
We will provide you with numerous resources. What can you do to be an ideal active learner? Among other things, you can: watch videos, participate in interactive tasks, participate in online discussion forums, complete quizzes and complete directed readings (some are optional). Last but not least, you can be reflective, linking what is covered in the course to your own work. Be critical, as we never learn from others blindly and without our own reflection.

Research during the course
We want to look at learners’ engagement throughout the course. When it comes to contributions to course content, like comments and discussions, we assume enrolment means you don’t mind this. For additional data collection we might ask for further consent. If you would like withdraw your contributions you can un-enrol.
