Applying “Vertical vs. Integrated Approaches”

In this article, you are asked to apply polio eradication community engagement concepts to a non-polio context - Ebola.
One man wearing a yellow worker's vest gazes lovingly at the baby he is holding while another man, also with a loving look, administers the oral polio vaccination to the baby.

Please review the reading Q&A – Tackling Congo’s Ebola outbreak ‘more than a public health response’

As you consider the situation described in the reading, draw on your experience and the lessons learned from polio eradication efforts described in the lectures. How would you apply what you have learned about community engagement during polio eradication efforts to the non-polio situation?

First, identify potential communities or community groups that might have different views about Ebola and how it is controlled.

Then, describe what you see as the critical problem related to community engagement in this situation.

Finally, describe in detail at least one strategy you would recommend. Be sure to:

  • Clarify the key actors in your strategy and what those actors should do
  • Describe the expected result(s)
  • Describe at least one potential negative response to your strategy and how you might prevent that response

Please take a moment to share your evaluation of the scenario in the discussion.
