Throughout this 3-week course, you will engage with a diversity of topics. Week 1 will cover an extensive introduction to the basics of cancer, exploring a case of a lung cancer patient. In week 2, you will deepen your understanding of skin cancer, one of the most common forms of cancer worldwide. Finally, in Week 3, you will find out more on head and neck oncology, examining the complex anatomy, diagnostics and treatment of cancers in this region.

  • Week 1

    Introduction to oncology

    • Welcome to the course

      This week, you’ll explore how cancers arise, the biological processes behind their development, and gain insight into various diagnostic methods and therapeutic strategies essential for managing metastasized cancer.

    • A brief history of cancer

      During these steps you will gain more insight in the history of cancer and the developments through time.

    • Cancer etiology

      In these step you will be introduced to cancer etiology.

    • Biology of cancer

      In these steps you will gain more insight in the biology of cancer and the mechanisms behind this.

    • Hallmarks of cancer

      In these steps you will gain more insight in the hallmarks of cancer and the mechanisms behind this.

    • Diagnostic modalities and therapeutic strategies in metastatic disease

      In these steps you will gain more insight in the different modalities of cancer treatments and which mechanism the specific treatments target. You will also meet our patient.

    • Wrap up of Week 1

      We wrap up the first week of the course.

  • Week 2

    Skin cancer

    • Suspicious skin lesions

      In the first part of this course you will meet a patient with a suspicious skin lesion and learn about the etiology and types of skin cancer.

    • Diagnosing skin cancer

      In this part of You will learn about recognizing skin cancer and taking steps to confirm the diagnosis.

    • Treatment of a melanoma of the skin

      In this activity you will focus on the treatment of a primary melanoma of the skin.

    • Treatment of the basal cell carcinoma

      In this activity you will learn about the treatment of a primary basal cell carcinoma.

    • How to approach the recurrence of cancer?

      After two years our patient returns with new melanoma metastases. In these steps we discuss the approach.

  • Week 3

    Head and neck cancer

    • Introduction to head and neck cancer

      We introduce the week on head and neck cancer.

    • Help doctor, I have a swelling in my neck!

      With the help of a patient case we will guide you on how to recognize malignancies in the head and neck area of patients with a swelling in the neck. You will also meet our patient, John.

    • The diagnostic flow chart

      A diagnostic flow chart will guide you to your working diagnosis.

    • Narrowing down the differential diagnosis

      The further steps will discuss how to narrow your differential diagnosis. Which imaging studies are required? Are diagnostic studies required to come to a definitive diagnosis?

    • Wrap up of the week

      The main points and specifics of the head-neck cancer week are summarized.

Who is the course for?

This course is tailored for undergraduate medical students seeking foundational knowledge in oncology, crucial for any healthcare professional interacting with cancer patients.

Who will you learn with?

I am an otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon. I treat patients with malignancies of the head and neck and patients with airway problems. My main research interest focuses on geriatric oncology.

I am Physician Assistant and work in the Surgical Oncology department at UMC Groningen. I mainly work in the outpatient clinic and in the operating room, and I'm also involved in teaching.

I am a molecular biologist and full professor of Experimental Oncology. My lab performs preclinical research primarily on glioblastoma and brain metastases.
