Summary of Week 1
The peoples of the Global South are exposed to dangerous living conditions such as typhoons, desertification and droughts.
The paucity of alternative livelihood activities, apart from what is offered by their environments and their inability to adapt to climate change, add to their vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change. Aside from migration, they have to contend with living under harsh conditions that are detrimental to their health, life, and livelihood.
Migration will merely transfer the problems caused by climate change vulnerability to other places. It is therefore important to find, cultivate, and offer alternative means of livelihood and to diversify the natural resource base of the ecological niches of native populations. This will make the environments of the peoples of the Global South more robust and resilient to climate change.
The diversification of biological and cultural activities that must be developed to enrich the living conditions of the Global South will be our topic next week.
Topic for discussion
For your discussion and reflection, please identify and tell us about alternative means of livelihood programs and other ways of diversifying the natural resources of your community or of other communities that you think are vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
