The design is ambitious but when delivered it will be the most exciting, innovative sports facility ever built. Quality is paramount and we can't cut corners, we need to make a statement with this project. The England national sports stadium is tired and in need of replacement. A consortium of investors have recognised that it's lagging behind other international sports facilities and have identified an opportunity to build a stadium of the future, which will offer a large return on investment. This is more than just architecture, we want to inspire people and be an uplifting symbol of progress.

Plus the planners don't like the design, they don't think it works in the interest of the local community and without them on board the project just can't move forward. I'm sure they'll get on board as soon as they realise the prestige that surrounds this project. It will bring huge investment to the local area, we've done a lot of research into this. The relationship between client and project manager can often be complicated and difficult to manage. Construction projects rely on a strong project management stance and comprehensive knowledge of what makes a construction project work.

We will discuss project parameters, why projects fail and introduce project methodologies, giving you the essential skills to deliver a successful construction project. Welcome to your course in Project and System Management. I understand your passion for this projects, and how thorough your research has been, however I would strongly advise that we carry out a value engineering exercise to offer alternatives that realign the budget, but we will have to compromise on the overall design I'm afraid. We can't afford to build this stadium without losing quality. With respect there is no compromise. The budget and brief are robust and we are well underway with our contractor selection process.

Welcome to the course

In the video, we heard a range of stakeholders discussing our first project, a new national sports stadium. They have some very big ideas on a medium-sized budget, and little enthusiasm from the local community.

How do you strike a balance between all the competing factors?

We look forward to beginning to answer this question with you as we explore the process of defining the project, identifying key stakeholders and developing the project procurement strategy, over the next two weeks. We’ll also be providing you with tools to understand how you might improve your own area of practice.

This week we will:

  • Introduce definitions of project

  • Identify the key stakeholders to a construction project

  • Establish the key stages on a project (both project management and specifically the construction project activities)

  • Produce a project strategic brief
