Discover the impacts of disruptive technologies with Hanyang University

Disruptive technologies, such as AI, have impacted major industries and reshaped our daily lives. Though it is a useful technology, modern data-centric AI has failed to benefit every member of the public without prejudice and bias.

This six-week course from Hanyang University will guide you through human-computer interaction (HCI) and how it can be used to make AI useful for all types of people.

You’ll learn how the HCI discipline can address the drawbacks of modern AI, and how to redefine it as human-centred AI to add value to every life.

Gain an introduction to human-computer interaction

You’ll develop knowledge of human-computer interaction to give you a fundamental understanding of why HCI should be incorporated with AI.

You’ll explore how the traditional HCI perspective has been changed for the new world of AI, transforming the way we interact with products and services.

Unpack AI design

Next, you’ll discover how modern AI has changed the way we design as you delve into different frameworks and uncover why human-centred AI design is needed.

With this knowledge, you’ll learn how to use tools and guidelines to align AI design with human values and how this makes AI more effective.

Explore AI ethics

Finally, you’ll focus on ethical AI design to learn how this is a crucial stage in considering how AI interacts with human actions.

Guided by the experts at Hanyang University, you’ll finish the course with the knowledge of how to make a user-centred AI system. You’ll have an understanding of the limitations of AI and how a human’s judgement can help to reduce such limitations, leading to successful human-centred AI systems.

Skip to 0 minutes and 17 seconds Imagine a new Samsung fridge that can adjust its temperature depending on the volume of the food in the shelf. It includes a new AI algorithm and it has substantial sales in the market. However, an unsatisfied customer commented that “It doesn’t have any option to set the temperature by myself.” “I have a Type 1 Diabetes,” “and the temperature for the medicine should be set at a specific figure.” Is this way of automatic decision making by AI good or bad? What do you think? If this is bad, how we can make the cutting-edge so-called AI fridge better?

Skip to 1 minute and 5 seconds Go back to 10 years ago as we used to set the temperature of the fridge by ourselves or just put another ‘manual’ option that can override the manufacturer’s AI algorithm. Is this right to do so? Our question throughout this course is “How can we make better products / services for human values, with AIs?” Through this question, you might first wonder what the AI products and services mean. Also, will the field of Human-Computer Interaction, so-called HCI, or UX, user experience, help us to make such better AI systems for our humans? Hi, I am Prof. Blake Hokyoung Ryu and the lead educator of the course titled as “Designing Human-Centered AI Products and Services.” Hi, I am Prof. Jieun Kim. Together with Prof.

Skip to 2 minutes and 7 seconds Ryu, we will lead you to the new world of artificial intelligence where it can change the way we interact with products and services. In the first week, we will let you know how the traditional HCI perspective has been changed for the new world of AI. Then we will figure out why the modern AI has changed the way we used to design. That being said, how to design such human-centered AI systems is the key to the scope of Week 3 - 5. We will employ as many as concrete examples we have found from the world as well as Korea, which help you to extend your horizon of thought with regard to AI products and services.

Skip to 2 minutes and 58 seconds In the final week, we wrap up the course with a special focus on ethical AI design, where many unethical predictions are made whilst AI interacts with the non-stationary (or non-repeating) human actions. In total, we will discuss six important topics of how to make a user-centered AI system throughout the six weeks course. We would like to guarantee that this course will help you to understand the limitations of AI and how to reduce such limitations with a human’s judgmental capability and UX understanding, which will accordingly lead to the successful human-centered AI systems in the end. Thank you for joining this course. See you soon.
