3.1

Skip to 0 minutes and 6 secondsHello, and welcome to Week Three of Exploring English, Magna Carta. In the first week of this course, we looked at the historical context for Magna Carta. In Week Two, we considered how Magna Carta has inspired social movements and freedom fighters through the ages. We looked at the American Declaration of Independence, universal suffrage, and 20th century freedom fighters Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. This week, we're going to discuss the relevance of Magna Carta in the modern world. We'll begin by looking at human rights. We'll then move on to consider the rights we have online. Do we need a Magna Carta for the digital age?

Skip to 0 minutes and 56 secondsAfter this, we'll examine the relationship between democracy and liberty, and explore some of the tensions between them. Then finally, we'll take some time to review and reflect on what we have learned over the last few weeks. We hope you enjoy and learn a lot from your final week of this course. Don't forget, you can ask questions and share comments at any time in the comments thread below.

This week we’re going to discuss the relevance of Magna Carta in the modern world.

We’ll begin by looking at Human Rights. We’ll then move on to consider the rights we have online: do we need a Magna Carta for the digital age?

After this, we’ll examine the relationship (and explore some of the tensions between) democracy and liberty.

As usual, there will be plenty of opportunity to focus on the English language. This week, we’ll look at poetic language and explore the use of metaphor and simile. We’ll learn about some of the language we use to describe Internet behaviour too. We’ll also be looking at hedging language: the language we use when we want to express an opinion in a polite way.

Finally, we’ll take some time to review and reflect on what we have learned over the last few weeks.

We hope you enjoy and learn a lot from your final week of this course.
