You’ll use market research methods to develop your product ideas, collect feedback, and adapt your plan as you progress through production.

Discover the processes involved in bringing a food product to life from branding designs to food packaging ideas

A number of processes involved in launching a food product may be missed by inexperienced entrepreneurs starting out in the food production industry.

On this course, you’ll be guided through every step to ensure you take advantage of each opportunity. You’ll learn how to develop prototypes, explore costing processes, and design branding, packaging, and labelling for your product.

Using consumer testing and pilots, you’ll create a final food product that reflects your target audience’s values, as well as your own brand identity.

Develop a marketing plan to allow your home business to break into the local food industry

Drawing on market research feedback throughout the process, you’ll design a detailed marketing plan to promote your product once it has been finalised, to reach target consumers.

By the end of this course you will understand how to develop, produce, and launch a food product, as well as having the skills to promote your product within the local market.

    Welcome and Introduction to Food Product Development

    • Welcome and Introduction to Food Product Development

      You will be introduced to your mentor, Andy Cordier, and discuss what needs to be considered when launching a new food product.

    • Market Research and Ideas

      Andy will discuss the importance of conducting market research and you will develop new food product ideas for your local area.

    • Concept Creation and Screening

      With the idea that you have identified, you will develop the product concept further and screen the idea.

    • Wrap of the Week

      A summary of what you have covered this week and a reflection on what you have learnt this far.

  • Week 2

    Developing Prototypes

    • Developing Prototypes

      With your concept, you will further develop this into a prototype. You will learn how to conduct a sensory evaluation and you will then trial the prototype with a small group of people.

      A summary of what you have covered this week and a reflection on what you have learnt this far.

  • Week 3

    Pilot Testing

    • Pilot Testing

      We discuss why a pilot run is important, how to recost the product after the pilot and how to track the pilot results.

    • Consumer Testing

      You will select a group of target market consumers to test your product. they will give you feedback and you will finalise your product.

      A summary of what you have covered this week and a reflection on what you have learnt this far.

  • Week 4

    Getting Ready to Go to Market

    • Getting Ready to Go to Market

      Various aspects of taking your products to market are discussed including your marketing plan, packaging and labelling. You will then develop your own marketing plan.

      A summary of what you have learnt and done during the week.

  • Week 5

    Product to Market

    • Product to Market

      You will learn how to track sales and market performance and think about which statistics would be important for the performance of your product. You will also learn about the importance of networks and partnerships.
