The number of transistors in a CPU continues to increase. Famously, the exponential pace of this growth over the last several decades is called Moore’s Law. What is the current status of Moore’s Law? Will the size of the transistor continue to shrink indefinitely? Can we maintain this pace for the next few years, or even a few decades? The limit of the law may be close; the size of the smallest feature is only a few times the size of a silicon atom.

Even as this growth in density slows, a great deal of room for innovation in computer systems remains. One alternative approach to making large advances in computational capabilities, at least for some problems, is quantum computing.

ムーアの法則：新しい技術の追求

CPUの中のトランジスタの数は現在も増え続けています。ここ数十年その数の増大のペースは指数関数的に伸びており、その現象はムーアの法則と呼ばれ、有名となっています。現在ムーアの法則はどの段階まで進んでいるのでしょうか？このペースをこの先、数年、または数十年と維持していくことができるのでしょうか？その限界はもう近いかもしれません。なぜなら、トランジスタのサイズは、最も小さくても、ケイ素原子の数倍程度が限界であるためです。

もしこの成長が非常に遅くなったとしても、コンピュータシステムの革新はまだ起こしうる余地があります。コンピュータの計算力を格段にあげうる一つの代替案が、これから学んでいく量子コンピュータです。
