This online course is the last of six courses. It will introduce you to the language that you need to:

  • book holiday accommodation;
  • talk about dates;
  • make a complaint;
  • order a meal;
  • make a request;
  • talk about what you are doing right now.

Learn Italian to get things done

During the four weeks of the course, you will learn the vocabulary and phrases you need to get things done, such as booking a hotel or a holiday house or ordering a meal - and also making a complaint. You will find out how to specify dates.

You will learn how to use the present continuous to talk about what you are doing and how to make a request using the verb potere (can).

You will expand your knowledge of Italian culture, with information on holiday accommodation, Italian regional dishes and fast food Italian style.

  • Week 1

    Holiday accommodation in Italy

    • Types of accommodation

      This first activity presents some key vocabulary relating to different types of accommodation and the services and facilities they offer.

    • Booking accommodation

      This activity introduces the language needed to book a hotel room.

    • Talking about dates

      In this activity you learn how to say dates and practise using them when booking accommodation.

    • Making a complaint

      In this activity you learn how to talk about things that might be wrong with your hotel room.

    • Over to you

      Learning another language requires personal effort. Here you can find some guidance to get the most out of what you learned this week. A range of additional audios are available for purchase, to help you consolidate the words.

  • Week 2

    Ordering a meal

    • Italian meals and food habits

      In this activity you will learn new vocabulary and useful expressions to use when ordering a meal in Italian. You will also learn about Italian food habits and regional specialities.

    • Ordering food

      In this activity you learn the phrases to use for ordering a meal.

    • Talking about Italian dishes and their ingredients

      In this activity you will become familiar with the ingredients of some famous Italian regional dishes. You also practise the use of the compound prepositions al, alla, etc.

    • Eating out

      In this activity, you practise ordering things and learn about fast food Italian-style.

    • Over to you

  • Week 3

    Making requests

    • Asking people to do something for you

      In this activity you practise asking somebody to do something for you, in formal and informal situations.

    • Responding to requests

      In this activity you continue practising requests, such as asking someone to pass you or bring you something, and learn how to respond to them.

    • Offering something

      In this activity, you learn various expressions that are used to offer people something. You will also read about traditions of Italian hospitality.

    • Making a suggestion

      In this activity, you will learn how to make suggestions, for example asking your friends if they feel like going out or if they fancy a coffee.

  • Week 4

    What you are doing

    • Talking about what you are doing right now

      In this activity, you will learn how to identify the present progressive tense and you will also learn the forms of the verb 'stare'.

    • Using irregular verbs to say what people are doing

      In this activity you can practise using the present progressive of some irregular verbs.

    • Using reflexive verbs to say what people are doing

      In this activity, you learn to say what various people are doing, using 'stare' to form the present progressive of reflexive verbs.

    • Social activities and festivals in Italy

      In this activity you learn about social activities medieval celebrations and festivals in Italy. You will also read about the importance of the group ('la comitiva') in Italian social life.

    • Over to you

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at people with little prior knowledge of Italian, who want to learn the basic language and find out about Italy and its regions and culture. The course assumes that you have already studied the previous five courses in the Italian for Beginners program. This course is taught through English.

Who will you learn with?

I am a Lecturer in Italian at The Open University. I am Italian but live in the UK. I love learning new languages, reading novels, walking in the country, listening to music and yoga.
