Welcome to Week 3

In this penultimate week of the course we will introduce you to the analytical techniques that are applied to study the metabolome.

In the first few activities we will look at the design of experiments to analyse the metabolome and the preparation of samples.

The design of experiments is important in any scientific experiment. In metabolomics it is very important to ensure confounding factors are not introduced into the studying and that all sources of variance are controlled with the exception of the one under investigation.

A vast range of samples may be used in metabolomics studies, we will look at the different sample types that are commonly analysed and discuss the preparation methods that may be applied to extract the different classes of chemicals.

A number of analytical approaches may be applied to measure the metabolome. In this course we will focus on the application of mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry to analyse the metabolome. We will look at both the advantages and applications of the approaches and illustrate how we are developing these approaches at the University of Birmingham.
