Task for lessons

In one of your lessons this week, set a group learning task and analyse the responses of the class. Can you identify any competent bystanders? Do you notice any other groups of pupils or individuals that you have perhaps missed in the past?

Consider the following:

  • What do you notice about their behaviours (engagement, motivation, social skills) at different points in the lesson?
  • With whom do they engage in the group task?
  • Are there any background or contextual details about these pupils that you know – or feel it would be helpful to find out?
  • How could you ensure these pupils are engaged in your lessons in the future?

If you do not have a lesson this week, use these questions to reflect on groups of students you have taught in the past. Share your responses in the comments.
