Welcome to the course

The lead educators for this course are Dr Nicola Englyst and Dr Mayank Patel.

  • Nicola is an Associate Professor, Programme Leader for MSc Diabetes Best Practice and Lead for Mentoring Scheme at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton.

  • Mayank has worked for University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust since December 2008 and is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton.

Both Nicola and Mayank share an interest in improving knowledge and understanding concerning the use of insulin.

Insulin is an essential diabetes medication, yet errors in prescribing and administering insulin occur frequently and can result in hypoglycaemia and even death. Improving knowledge of healthcare professionals, people with diabetes and their carers will improve insulin safe use.

We’ve endeavoured to produce a learning course where all information about insulin can be conveniently found in one place. We cover how insulin works, its physiology and biochemistry, through to its use clinically to help people control their diabetes.

This course seeks to present information on insulin in a way that will help reduce concerns around its clinical use and promote healthcare professional confidence.

Given that the vast majority of people with diabetes using insulin will not have regular access to a healthcare professional, the course will also be of relevance and interest to any of you who fall into this category, by providing an invaluable insight into how insulin can help you to live well with diabetes.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe how insulin works to control blood glucose levels
  • Explain why a lack or reduced effectiveness of insulin in diabetes results in high blood glucose levels and how long term high blood glucose levels can lead to complications in diabetes
  • Compare the different types of insulins and their clinical uses
  • Describe how to prescribe and administer insulin safely
  • Identify the side effects of insulin and other factors that can affect its clinical performance
  • Explain how the safe and correct use of insulin can lead to well controlled diabetes and contribute to a good quality of life
