Irery Melchor Duran, 24 years old from Mexico, talks about how the free online course, ‘The secret power of brands’ on FutureLearn.com has helped her venture into a career in marketing.
Recently graduated Irery reached out to the FutureLearn team to tell us how taking part in courses on FutureLearn.com has given her confidence to progress in her career. She believes that employers across the world should encourage their employees to do the same.
Irery tells us her story…
“I live in Mexico, Aguascalientes. Having graduated with a Bachelors in Marketing I now work as a Junior Consultant in Asesori®, a Mexican consulting firm.
“The University of East Anglia’s course, ‘The secret power of brands’, on FutureLearn.com has helped me develop a special brand thinking. I loved all of the recent information about case-studies and articles as well as the way that the teacher encouraged us to reflect on topics.
“I chose this course firstly because of the title, topic and approach, but also because the teacher is himself a practitioner and academic.
“The course has helped me to understand the changing brand environment by learning from expert studies such as the Harvard Business Review and The Economist, to name just two.
“The professors are amazing, they encouraged reflection throughout the course. Their role in the industry means that their points of view have real business scope. In particular, I have enjoyed learning from brand and CEO experts like the professors at UEA and the CEO of Google in the UK. At work I do branding and franchise projects and I am confident that my newly learnt knowledge is going to help me make better projects in the future.
“My plan for the future is to learn more about brands, business and marketing and to eventually become an opinion leader in brands and business. I would especially like to work in brand valuation, branding and market research.
“I think that to be a great consultant and opinion leader you must learn from the best professors in that field and develop a creative mind able to solve problems and FutureLearn has given me that opportunity.
“I believe that employers across the world could use FutureLearn to help their employees’ progress. It is a very dynamic platform, you read articles, see short videos and see opinions from experts about different topics. In fact, I have already recommended FutureLearn to my co-workers.
“The next courses I am signed up to are ‘A beginners’ guide to writing in English for university study’ by the University of Reading and ‘The mind is flat: the shocking shallowness of human psychology’ by the University of Warwick. I think it is very important to be able to write in English and also to understand human psychology when working in marketing.
“FutureLearn not only encourages learning but a whole new way of thinking and I am thrilled to be a part of it!”
