Xu Shen, a philologist of the Eastern Han Dynasty,wrote the first dictionary in Chinese history – Shuowen Jiezi.In this book, Xu Shen summarized the composition principles of Chinese characters into six types:Pictographic, referential, associative compound, semantic-phonetic, transliteration, and borrowing.
