We are delighted to welcome you to this short online course.

A Three-Step Guide to Equitable Makerspaces was developed through the Making Spaces research project – an international collaboration to develop and share inclusive practices in makerspaces.

This course is designed to help support equity-building in your makerspaces.

The content is primarily aimed at people working in or with makerspaces, but the concepts could be applied generally to youth engagement programmes.

Over the next three weeks, the UCL Research team and makerspace practitioners and young people from around the world will guide you through the 3-STEP approach and provide you with the tools to make positive change in the context of your programme.

A 4 year international collaboration

We will cover the following key objectives:

  1. Understand and develop critical reflection in relation to makerspace practice.
  2. Recognise key action areas and how they can support equitable practice.
  3. Explore how to access and critically select which tools to use to evaluate equitable and inclusive practice.
  4. Develop a plan to put the three steps into practice.

This is a self-paced course. Each step will guide you through the approach and give support on how to apply within your context. However, we strongly recommend active participation in the discussion forums – sharing thoughts and experiences with your peers to learn from each other.

A certificate is available for those who upgrade, mark at least 90% of course steps as complete, and score at least 70% on course quizzes and tests.
