Welcome to Week 2

In Week 2, we’ll explore the history of luxury and fashion in Africa and its growing global influence.

We’re going to consider a contemporary view of African luxury fashion in detail with a focus on the significance of sustainability. We’ll reflect on the importance of culture and brands that favour slow change – preserving traditional craftsmanship over the detrimental fast-fashion model of the global industry. We will review the history of luxury fashion in Africa. We’ll look to examples of classical and conceptual African fashion and champion their positive impact on an institutionalized global industry.

We will explore the different approaches to the development of African luxury fashion and map the vast cultural influences across the continent. Using examples from industry, we will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of community in creative African practices.
